In 2007 I went to China for the first and so far only time in my life to attend an exhibition. I don’t speak a word of Chinese, but my aim was to try to get to the rural areas and photograph the villagers the way I did in other places - in Russia, Georgia, Turkey and Spain by that time. Having faced a lot of difficulties and the unwillingness of the organizers of the exhibition and local authorities to help or, at least, to indicate the places I might visit, followed for one week by a young interpreter sent after me to spy and report on me and who would refuse to interpret for me and, sometimes, accompanied by local policemen on their motorbikes, I still managed to get to people’s houses and do what I wanted to and, to some extent, was even helped by the policemen.
